Chocolate Peanut Butter Zucchini Smoothie and my current pregnancy favs!

Pregnant or not activewear is my go to. Who doesn’t love a comfy pair of leggings that not only hug your curves but move with you for the ultimate in comfiness? Chocolate for breakfast? Need I say more… as a faithful chocolate lover I continue to find any excuse to incorporate some form of the sweet stuff into my recipes. My top choice lately has been adding it to smoothies. Who doesn’t love to slurp (sound effects required) from a straw the deliciousness that comes with a creamy, ice cold, just the right amount of sweetness chocolate smoothie? The best part about it is that you can actually indulge in this particular treat guilt-free! Sneak in those extra healthy add-ins and this dessert like smoothie is breakfast, lunch or snack approved! My latest go-to smoothie of choice curbs those cravings and packs in lots of healthy pregnancy benefits which I’ve listed below beside the ingredients.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Zucchini Smoothie

Serves: 1

Prep time: 5 minutes


  • 1 c frozen zucchini (Contains folate, potassium and calcium all essential in bone development of you and your growing baby.)
  • 1 c frozen banana (High in potassium which can help maintain a healthy blood pressure and reduce leg cramps- ouch!)
  • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder (Contains iron which is so important in the creation of healthy blood and it also moves oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and to your baby. Even though low in caffeine always consume in moderation.)
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (Aside from the yumminess and extra protein, consuming nuts while pregnant may in fact help in lowering the allergy risk for your child as proposed by a selection of recent studies…that would be quite the magical feature!)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (With so many amazing benefits just one scoop of these seeds can give you a much needed boost of energy while battling the dreaded pregnancy fatigue during your first and third trimesters. Move over caffeine…this is the perfect healthy pick me up for you and baby!)
  • 1/2 c cashew milk (Contains healthy fats and protein and is a great alternative to those who can’t handle dairy.)
  • 3 ice cubes (Ummm…you know all of that water you’re supposed to drink??? well this counts, too.)


  1. Add all of the ingredients to a high powered blender and blend, blend, blend until smooth. Serve immediately with a slurping appropriate straw.


Aside from having such an easy pregnancy this far the only real complaint I’ve had is back pain. When I say back pain (as I assume most other pregnant women can agree) it is no joke. If you aren’t familiar with more specifically, sciatic pain is pressure that’s being applied to the sciatic nerve which runs along the lower portion of the spine, aka the baby is most likely resting comfortably directly on top of this spot. It’s generally described as a radiating pain that shoots down one side of your lower back, to your hip and sometimes all the way down to your foot. Lovely isn’t it? Although not curable while there’s a tiny human pressing up against it, there are some options for temporary relief. Prenatal massage is great for this kind of discomfort, just check with your healthcare provider prior to scheduling an appointment. I’ve been getting massages every few weeks for a majority of my pregnancy and it’s been a life saver! Another great option for relief is gentle yoga and stretching. Again, check with your doctor before you attempt any form of exercise but I’ve linked below some great prenatal options that have helped me along the way:

Lastly, as far as back pain goes, the product that I can’t get enough of has been this Maternity Belly Band by Blanqi (pictured above). I was skeptical at first relying on creams and lotions to prevent the dreaded cellulite, stretch marks and unwanted skin changes. Well I stand corrected… this line is the BEST! A few other must have’s…

If there could be two people who feel very drastically different about a pillow it would be my boyfriend and I. From my stand point this pregnancy pillow is what I imagine sleeping in a cloud feels like. It not only wraps around you but supports and hugs every single achy inch while you try your best to sleep soundly through the night. On the other hand, those not sleeping in this white fluffy dream are hanging onto the bed for dear life since this pillow does take up a good solid portion of the bed. Lucky for me he loves me and knows not to mess with a pregnant woman’s night sleep. 😉 On a serious note though, this pillow is a must…it really does offer you a more comfortable sleep while helping to support everything from the top of your head to your feet. The best feature is that since it’s a wrap around version there’s no need to flip the entire pillow and readjust when turning over. Per most doctor’s orders a good prenatal vitamin is key. Especially in early pregnancy when nausea may set in and effect your healthy eating habits, a vitamin is a good way to fill in some of the blanks until you can comfortably consume well rounded meals again. It’s a whole food based vitamin which means they are predominately made up of concentrated and dehydrated foods which can be absorbed by the body more easily. As someone who has a hard time taking vitamins due to acid reflux I’ve found if taken with food these particular vitamins cause no issues and not even a slight amount of nausea which is a common complaint among pregnant women taking a prenatal supplement.

As I mentioned above consuming water is SO important throughout pregnancy. Not only does your body need it to prevent dehydration and to complete many necessary functions but it can also help to minimize cramping, Braxton Hicks contractions, dizziness, nausea, headaches and urinary tract infections which are all very common symptoms that occur at various stages of pregnancy. Although I’m pretty good about drinking an adequate amount of water it does get a little boring after a while. I’ve found sipping on fruit infused water not only helps me to consume more but I’m also reaping the benefits from the add-ins! However it is especially important to make smart choices when growing a tiny human. It’s quite the miracle and achievement and should be every reason to give yourself the best this world can offer!
