You know what would be funny if I actually just talked about food. I’d throw you all for a loop posting about this delicious Avocado Turkey Burger and actually write solely about this recipe. Wouldn’t that be something…
Yeah, but that would be a pretty lifeless blog entry in my opinion. I mean talking about a turkey burger. How much can you actually say other than, well, lets just let the picture speak for itself…(drooling)…mmmm…now you should probably go make them.
Okay, moving on to other things completely unrelated to turkey burgers, avocados and food for that matter. You know because that’s how I roll…
I was thinking the other evening as I was drinking a glass of wine and letting my mind wander (typical, the wondering not the wine), about what it means to be truly happy. I’m sure you can relate that life gets stressful and you have those moments when you just want to scream at the top of your lungs, “Why me?!” and simultaneously pull your hair out. Yeah, I have had many of those moments and have lost a lot of hair. I often wonder why does so much fall onto my lap, why does it seem like there’s a dark cloud following me through life, why can’t I dig myself out of this hole or how many people did I wrong in a past life to be up against all of this? I know, I know, it can’t be ALL that bad you say. Though sometimes it really can seem like it is.
Regardless of how you or I feel when we wake up in the morning, while we routinely go about our daily to-do’s or try and work through life’s stress, we all really do seek the same thing, happiness. It’s funny that in a world that views things so differently and with such divide we really all only ever want the same thing. So how come we just can’t find it? Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret…
You can’t go seeking happiness if you already have it.
I know, I know, the yogi with a food blog just stated something deep (wouldn’t be my first time). In all seriousness, it’s the truth. Happiness originates from inside not out. You will never truly be happy if you aren’t already happy with yourself first. Most people have this idea that they need to fill their life with “stuff” like objects, live on the edge kind of adventures, be at a certain level, surround yourself with certain people or check off various kinds of dreams to achieve their own kind of happy. Many fail to realize that if you’re seeking those things strictly for that happy once those things are gained that empty feeling still really never goes away. So, then they move on to the next thing continuing to try and fill that void outside of their being rather than looking in the simplest place possible. True, it’s not always as easy as turning inward and going, “Oh there it is! Well, now I’m happy!”. Recognizing it’s there and actually believing in it, though, is a good way to start.
Take it from me, you may need a sturdy shovel to dig and find it but I can assure you that by accepting yourself, every flaw, every achievement, every mistake, every bad habit, every thing you love about yourself, every thing you dislike about yourself, EVERYTHING, you will begin to uncover that very kind of happy. Believe it or not if you can love even the parts you normally hate you will begin to find that they don’t seem so bad anymore. If you accept them long enough, the things you used to want to change aren’t really that big of a deal, in fact, you kind of begin to LIKE them. See, right there, appreciating even what may seem awful suddenly isn’t so bad…funny how that works, isn’t it?
I don’t always look in the mirror, flip my hair over my shoulder, and say, “Well now, you’re looking extra awesome today!”. No, I don’t do that…okay, maybe just once or twice. I do sometimes have to force myself to find the motivation to workout, to feel confident about the path I’m on or to not feel like the stress is going to swallow me whole. However, in those very moments of despair I take a deep breath and remind myself that I CAN get through this. MY LIFE is still amazing even with it’s bumps, less than awesome moments and times when I’m wishing I could just wave a magic wand and make that black cloud vanish. There is still happiness to be found no matter what. I bet if you looked inward long enough you’d agree that there’s a lot you too can be happy with. Things you may even have once overlooked. You’d be amazed that once you start believing there’s happiness within you and how much you can be grateful for it begins to reflect onto the outside world, those around you, what you can achieve, those things you once used to try and fill that void with now give you a sense of complete satisfaction and fulfillment rather than just a continued emptiness. Learning to be thankful for every challenge, every achievement, every heartbreak, every milestone, every bump in the road, every experience, your sheer importance in this world, every single thing, should make you happy since it’s all what cumulatively makes you you. That very happiness within you waiting to be freed is more powerful than anything you’ll ever find on the outside.
These burgers have been incorporated into my weekly meal prepping for the past month and it’s easy to see why! My favorite toppings (top picture) are 1 slice of uncured turkey bacon, a spoonful of spicy homemade guac and a lightly fried egg wrapped in crisp lettuce!
Avocado Turkey Burgers

Makes: 4 burgers
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 18-20 minutes
- 1 lb fat-free ground turkey
- 1/2 c avocado, mashed
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp jalapeño, minced
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- sea salt and black pepper to taste
- Spray grill (or pan) with non-stick spray (I use coconut oil spray) and preheat on medium.
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine the ground turkey, avocado, egg, jalapeño and spices. Mix well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
- Divide the mixture evenly and form into 4 burgers.
- Place each onto the preheated grill and let cook about 10 minutes on the first side until slightly charred and then flip. Cook for about an additional 8-10 minutes on the other side until the center is no longer pink and reads 165F with a meat thermometer.
- When done, remove the burgers and allow to cool slightly before topping with your favorite ingredients.
Tip: For a juicier burger flip as little as possible, preferably only once.
