Strawberry Protein Pop Tarts

Trust. Oh what a big, scary word. A loaded gun of sorts. I think we can all agree to disagree that trust can be a slippery slope. It can be very easy to trust someone provided we are shown we have the ability to but it is also just as easily ripped from beneath us. It only takes one tiny, even minuscule, moment to throw that trust right out of the window. Then getting it back, well that a whole different story.

I think in one form or another each of us has questioned our trust in someone or something. Maybe you even questioned it in yourself at one point. We often doubt our faith in others and in our own abilities based upon past experiences. If it happens to be a person that breaks it everyone that proceeds them will assumably do the same. Funny how that works, isn’t it? Though, here we are, waiting patiently to be able to put all of our faith into one thing yet as soon as the opportunity arises we jump ship. It’s like a really, really, really bad habit.

So, stop it.

In all seriousness, there are reasons we often find ourselves bailing as it’s not easy to put your faith into someone once trust has been previously broken. Allowing yourself that vulnerability and then having it taken from you, trampled upon and then to be handed back the broken pieces makes mending it exceedingly complicated. Theoretically, no matter how well you stitch it back up it may never quite be the same. Which in turn is why many relationships fail whether it be with a family member, friend or lover. No matter what side of the spectrum you’re on it’s hard to come back from that and sadly some aren’t even willing to try. As much as we do make mistakes, and yes we are allowed to since we are only human, you risk a lot of yourself either way. Optimistically speaking, it is possible to move past broken trust but not without a little elbow grease thrown in first. There are many factors that play a role in putting all of those pieces back together in the best way possible. For starters, communication is key. Without it, you might as well just assume we all are telepathic, which, I may point out, we are not. Sorry. Being able to communicate your feelings, thoughts, actions, etc. allow the other person a bit of reassurance that your intentions towards them are genuine if you’re willing to express them with ample effort. Even on the receiving end, being willing to communicate your feelings can allow the other person a better understanding just how broken the trust may be and what may or may not rectify the situation. Another important piece of the puzzle is action. Not only can we not assume what someone else is thinking we definitely can’t anticipate what someone’s actions are without it actually happening. Trust me, if I could have any superhuman capabilities this might be one of them. It would save me a lot of money in aspirin. All joking aside though, as they say, actions can speak louder than words. If you’re ready to follow up what you express verbally with matching actions then there is hope.  No matter what occurs to break that trust it does take both parties to make a right by applying both methods, balance is key remember. As in any similar situation acknowledging the cause is the first step in rebuilding it. Putting aside egos, guilt, anger, fear, whatever the emotions are that teasingly swirl around inside and being able to implement positive change will allow a chance to rebuild what’s been broken.

Be honest with yourself, in the end, if you want something badly enough (and have trust in  your own heart that you do) accept that it won’t come without effort. If it’s worth rebuilding that trust it CAN be done providing you’re willing to use a little bit of that elbow grease. Remember that in the end it would be worse to give up and regret than to try and mend it.

Strawberry Protein Pop Tarts

Makes:pop tarts

Prep time: 40 minutes

Bake time: 20 minutes




  • 5 tbsp organic strawberry jam (homemade or any store bought kind will work)
  • 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder

Icing (optional)

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 2 tsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3-5 tbsp water
  • sprinkles (optional)


  1. Whisk together by hand the flour, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Using a stand or hand-held mixer with the dough attachment, add in the butter and shortening and mix until the dough forms into small lumps.
  3. Add in a tablespoon at a time of ice water until a cohesive dough forms. (Don’t add too much water or it becomes sticky.)
  4. Divide the dough into 4 balls, wrap in seran wrap and let chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  5. When dough is ready, preheat the oven to 350F.
  6. Roll out each ball of dough between 2 pieces of parchment paper until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Using a pie cutter, carefully cut out 2 rectangles leaving a little extra around the edges to seal. Lay both rectangles gently onto a parchment lined baking sheet.
  7. Repeat step 6 until you have made 12 rectangles (2 per pop tart) and you have a total of 6 spaced evenly onto the pan.
  8. Mix together the filling ingredients and spoon about one heaping tablespoon onto each of the 6 rectangles. Be careful not to spread to the edges as it will leak out the sides when baking.
  9. Once each has filling, place another dough rectangle on top and using a fork press around the four edges of each to seal. (See video above for reference.)
  10. Using the fork, gently poke holes along the top of each pop tart to allow venting.
  11. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Allow pop tarts to cool entirely before icing. When ready, mix together all of the ingredients and then add the water by the tablespoon adjusting to acheive desired consistency. Spoon icing over the top of each and top with sprinkles.


Nutrition (per pop tart): 330 calories, 15g fat, 37g carbs, 6g sugar, 10g protein
